MountjoyGroundforce - Driveways

Block paving is extremely popular and is used throughout the UK. It involves multiple blocks, bricks or pavers that are positioned side by side to create a flat, continuous drive. This type of paving is commonly used in both commercial and domestic applications, and has been a favourite choice for many years especially for domestic drives. MountjoyGroundforce are big evangalists for block paving driveways, and have been fitting and repairing them for many years.

One of the best advantages of laying block paving is that it is incredibly low maintenance.

Due to the nature of the material it does not require top polishing. In fact, just regularly washing your driveway or patio with simple soap and water will do the trick and help keep it looking fresh and bright for years to come.

Additionally, block paving can easily withstand harsh, erratic weathers, making it an ideal material for the fluctuating British weather.

  1. MountjoyGroundforce will visit your property, take measurements, discuss any other requirements that might be needed, such as brickwork, lighting, wrought iron etc. This will enable an accurate quotation to be provided at a fixed price.
  2. All utility services (gas, water, drainage, cable TV, telephony / broadband cables) and electrical cabling will be located, to ensure no damage occurs during the excavation that is required.
  3. Check whether you will require planning permission. In some cases, you may need planning permission, such as when your driveway will be more than 5m² and is not permeable, which causes rainwater to run into the road. If your drive is less than 5m² or is made from a permeable material, planning permission is not required.
  4. Removal of the existing driveway.
  5. Installation of drainage and connection to soakaways.
  6. A 150-200mm sub-base, consisting of crushed stone or similar is laid and compacted with a whacker plate.
  7. The edging blocks are secured with cement.
  8. A membrane is laid to help prevent weeds.
  9. A laying course of sand (sharp) is applied to a depth of 60-65mm, which will reduce to approximately 40mm after compacting.
  10. The paving blocks are then laid.
  11. Kiln dried sand is then swept into the gaps between the block pave, which are compacted in order to allow the sand to sink down.  This provides stability for the blocks and allows for the movement of vehicles on the surface.
Once paving is installed, it is a good idea to occasionally maintain and clean your driveway. Most maintenance can be carried out by the homeowner, such as removing weeds, but for deeper block paving cleaning, you may wish to consider hiring a professional cleaner.
Professional block paving cleaners use specialist equipment that thoroughly clean a driveway without damaging the blocks.
The frequency that a driveway should be cleaned will depend on the conditions to which it is exposed. Block paving that is regularly covered in dirt, oil, bird droppings, etc., will need to be cleaned more often.
After a deep clean, the drive can be further preserved with the application of a sealer.
Sealants are useful for helping weatherproof your pavers and also ensure that they keep their colour. The sun can discolour certain pavers but a UV resistant sealant will help to protect your bricks.
